Eminem's Mother Debbie Nelson Dies at 69 After Battling Lung Cancer

Debbie Nelson, the mother of rapper Eminem, has passed away at the age of 69. Known for her strained relationship with her son, which became a subject of Eminem’s lyrics, Nelson’s death was confirmed by the rapper’s longtime representative, Dennis Dennehy. While the cause of death was not disclosed, it is known that Nelson had been battling lung cancer.

Born in 1955 on a military base in Kansas, Debbie Nelson had a turbulent relationship with her son, Marshall Mathers III, better known as Eminem. The rapper's personal struggles and his complicated relationship with his mother were made public through his music. One of the most notable songs, “Cleaning Out My Closet,” released in 2002, vividly portrays Eminem’s anger towards his mother, stating, “Witnessin’ your mama poppin’ prescription pills in the kitchen... My whole life I was made to believe I was sick when I wasn’t.”

Eminem's frustrations with his mother were also referenced in his Oscar-winning hit “Lose Yourself,” a track from the movie 8 Mile. In the song, he mentions “mom’s spaghetti,” a phrase that became iconic, though it reflected a simmering tension between the rapper and his mother. “Lose Yourself” went on to win Best Rap Song at the 2004 Grammy Awards.

Debbie Nelson took legal action in the early 2000s, filing defamation lawsuits over Eminem’s public statements about her in interviews and on radio shows. In her 2008 memoir, My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem, she sought to share her side of the story, revealing the complexities of their relationship. Nelson described a time when she and her son were very close, writing, “Marshall and I were so close that friends and relatives commented that it was as if the umbilical cord had never been cut.” In the book, she also shared her difficult childhood experiences, including a violent home environment and the solace she found in spending summers with her grandmother, who showed her love and affection.

In 2004, Nelson became a victim of a violent incident when a 16-year-old dragged her from her car on Eight Mile Road, the street famously featured in Eminem’s film 8 Mile She was left with bruises and a broken foot, and the teenager responsible was sentenced to over four years in prison for the attack.

Despite the contentious nature of their relationship, Eminem’s achievements have continued to make headlines. Most recently, he won Best Hip-Hop Act at the 2024 MTV EMAs and was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2022. In October, Eminem shared the news that he would become a grandfather, revealing through a heartfelt music video that his daughter, Hailie Jade, is expecting a child.

This story has been updated to correct that Eminem’s announcement about becoming a grandfather was made in October, not last month.
